Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Learn Chinese News iOS app and this website (learnchinese.dlaisoft.com), operated by David Lai ("I", "me"). By using the app or website, you agree to these Terms.

1. What the app is

Learn Chinese News is a language-learning tool. It fetches publicly available news articles on demand at your request, and presents them alongside machine-generated translations, pinyin, read-aloud audio, and vocabulary aids for personal study. It is not a news publisher, does not maintain a library of articles, and does not redistribute publisher content.

2. License

I grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the app for your own non-commercial language study, subject to these Terms and Apple's standard App Store terms.

3. Third-party content

News headlines and articles belong to their respective publishers and are subject to the publishers' own terms. The app accesses content you specifically request, the same way a browser would, and does not store it beyond a brief processing cache. You are responsible for using the paste-a-URL feature only with content you are entitled to access.

4. Machine translation disclaimer

Translations, pinyin, and vocabulary definitions are generated by AI models and automated tools. They may contain errors and are provided as study aids only — not as authoritative translations. Do not rely on them where accuracy matters (legal, medical, financial, or similar contexts).

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• use the app or its backend to scrape, bulk-download, store, or republish news content;
• circumvent rate limits or usage controls, or access the backend other than through the app;
• use the service for any unlawful purpose or in a way that infringes others' rights;
• interfere with or disrupt the service.

6. Availability and changes

The service depends on third-party feeds and AI services and is provided with fair-use rate limits to keep it sustainable. I may modify, suspend, or discontinue features (or the service itself) at any time, and may update these Terms by posting a revised version on this page with a new effective date. Continued use after changes means you accept the revised Terms.

7. No warranty

The app and website are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement.

8. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, I will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data or profits, arising out of your use of the app or website. My total liability for any claim will not exceed the amount you paid for the app in the twelve months before the claim arose.

9. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, USA, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules.
